Position: Full-time term position
Term: Through 31 March 2023 (renewable April 1st each year, subject to program funding)
Salary: $23.14 per hour, 37.5 hours per week
Location: Charlottetown
IRSA is seeking a Settlement Worker (NSS Program) to help us on our mission of building a welcoming and inclusive environment through bringing diverse communities together and empowering newcomers to build a future in PEI.
We help all newly landed immigrants and newcomers to Canada by providing vital support in the areas of short-term settlement services, long-term inclusion and community integration programs in the province of Prince Edward Island.

How You'll Spend Your Time
As a Settlement Worker, your primary area of focus will be providing settlement and integration supports to newcomer immigrants arriving in Canada. You will collaborate with internal and external partners to provide support and education for clients in relation to their settlement, health & wellness, family, housing, and accessing relevant programming and support services with the goal of their successful integration into their local community. You will be:
- Conducting holistic assessments of client strengths and needs, developing and implementing appropriate individualized settlement plans outlining a strategy to achieve settlement success based on identified needs, available services and community supports for newcomer immigrant families and individuals while identifying and overcoming potential barriers
- Monitoring of settlement plans to ensure clients are on target, adjusting plans, if necessary, to meet individual client needs
- Providing orientation services based on assessed client needs to ensure basic awareness of Canada, PEI, and the local community, including public systems and services such as housing, health, transportation, education, and rights and responsibilities
- Referring clients to internal and external programs and services as determined through needs assessments performed
- Referring and assisting clients with navigating government systems and community resources based on assessed needs, being a strong advocate, including assisting with applications, documentation, and paperwork related to settling in Canada and PEI
- Providing supportive para counselling, referrals and information to empower clients to solve and cope with challenges arising from newcomer resettlement in Canada
- Arranging access for clients and families to all relevant health care appointments, including organization of interpreter services and transportation arrangements both within and outside of Prince Edward Island
- Liaising with community organizations to form partnerships for assisting newcomers with wellness and mental-health-related concerns
- Providing navigation support and advocacy for individual clients or families who require assistance in accessing mental health and addiction service supports
- Performing regular wellness check-ins with clients in the office, providing individual counselling support, referral and follow-up
- Ensuring up-to-date case notes are completed on client files in a fulsome manner within IRSA’s client management system
- Evaluating service program delivery and providing regular reporting for funding partners
- Participating in regularly scheduled internal meetings and professional development opportunities to understand individual, team and organizations role in providing programming, supports and services for newcomers
The typical work schedule is Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with availability required after hours and on weekends.
What You'll Bring
- You have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology or related disciplines, coupled with at least one (1) year of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- You have a proven ability to identify service gaps and manage caseloads within the context of competing priorities.
- You are an effective communicator in the English language, with excellent written and verbal communication skills; you are confident in public speaking and presentation settings; the ability to communicate in languages other than English would be considered a strong asset.
- You have demonstrated a high level of empathy coupled with a strong working knowledge of challenges and issues facing the newcomer population, networks and support organizations with demonstrated cultural competence and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Previous experience working with immigrant or refugee populations would be beneficial.
- Previous experience working in a non-profit and/or non-government organization would be an asset.
- You are computer-proficient, and have experience working with MS Office applications, social media and Google applications; experience working with a Client Management System (CMS) would be considered an asset.
- You have a valid PEI driver's license with access to reliable transportation.
