Guía para Recién Llegados a la Isla del Príncipe Eduardo, Canadá

Legal Advice

In a new country, it can be confusing if you find yourself needing legal advice. You may need it if you are buying a house, starting a business, divorcing your spouse or are facing criminal charges. Depending on your situation, there are different ways to deal with your legal advice needs.

Lawyers

In Canada, like in many other countries in the world, lawyers help their clients with legal advice and services in many areas. They act as advisors in making agreements and solving legal problems, and in preparing legal documents such as wills, contracts, deeds, and court documents.

How to find a lawyer

If you need a lawyer's help with a legal problem:

  • Search online for "PEI lawyers".
  • Contact a law office and ask if they have a lawyer who can help with your type of problem. If they don’t, they might give you the name of another office that can help.
  • Ask your friends, coworkers, or family if they know a good lawyer — especially if they had a similar legal problem.

PEI Legal Aid

PEI Legal Aid gives free legal help with some family and criminal law problems. It is for people who have low income and cannot afford a lawyer.

To get legal aid, you must:

  • have a low income, and
  • not be able to pay for a lawyer yourself.

Community Legal Information

Community Legal Information (CLI) is a Prince Edward Island non-profit organization that helps people understand the law and the justice system.

CLI provides:

  • legal navigators who can answer your general questions about the law, and help you find information and support,
  • a legal library offering easy-to-understand information about the law and justice system in multiple languages, and
  • a Lawyer Referral Service, which can connect you with a lawyer for up to forty-five minutes of advice for a small fee.
