Position: Full-Time Term Position
Term: October 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023 (renewable, subject to program funding)
Salary: $23.14 per hour, 37.5 hours per week
Location: IRSA office in Summerside

IRSA is seeking a Youth Settlement Worker – Future Readiness Mentor, working out of our Summerside, PE location, to help us on our mission of building a welcoming and inclusive environment through bringing diverse communities together and empowering newcomers to build a future in PEI.

We help all newly landed immigrants and newcomers to Canada by providing vital support in the areas of short-term settlement services, long-term inclusion and community integration programs in the province of Prince Edward Island.

How You'll Spend Your Time

As a Youth Settlement Worker – Future Readiness Mentor, your primary area of focus will be providing support and assistance to immigrant students (Grade 9 to Grade 12) in the Summerside area on aspects related to job search, career planning and future readiness. Additionally, you will collaborate with the Youth Settlement Services (YSS) team supporting immigrant students in the PEI school system (Kindergarten to Grade 12) to successfully integrate into their communities. You will be:

  • Promoting the Future Readiness (FR) program amongst clients grades 9 to 12 in the greater Summerside area
  • Collaborating with the YSS team to deliver twelve (12) on-line monthly sessions focused on career development and skills training
  • Mentoring FR clients one-on-one to provide support with resume and cover letter development, interview preparation, and post-secondary education options and applications
  • Supporting youth clients in acquiring part-time jobs and summer employment as needed
  • Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with local businesses and seeking networking opportunities with potential employers
  • Supporting the YSS team with programming in the Summerside area and in Charlottetown as needed
  • Monitoring and maintaining an efficient record management system including daily updating of the YSS Client Management System database, data spreadsheets and project reports

The typical work schedule is Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with availability required after hours and on weekends.

What You'll Bring

  • You have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology or related disciplines, coupled with at least one (1) year of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; previous employment counselling experience would be an asset.
  • You have experience working with children and youth; previous experience working with immigrant students would be an asset.
  • You are an effective communicator in the English language, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and you are confident in public speaking and presentation settings; ability to communicate in languages other than English would be considered a strong asset.
  • You are client-focused, with a demonstrated high level of empathy coupled with a strong working knowledge of challenges and issues facing newcomer population, networks and support organizations with demonstrated cultural competence and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • You are an effective team player who works well under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • You are detail-oriented and have a positive attendance and work record.
  • Previous experience working with immigrant or refugee populations would be beneficial.
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit organization and/or non-government organization would be an asset.
  • You are computer proficient, experience working with MS Office applications, social media and Google applications; experience working with a Client Management System (CMS) would be considered an asset.
  • You have a valid PEI driver's license with access to reliable transportation.
