Immigrant & Refugee Services Association PEI is hiring an accounting clerk for a full-time term position.

Position: Full-time term position
Term: Through 31 March 2023 (renewable April 1st each year, subject to program funding)
Salary: $23.14 per hour, 37.5 hours per week
Location: Charlottetown

IRSA is seeking an Accounting Clerk to help us on our mission of building a welcoming and inclusive environment through bringing diverse communities together and empowering newcomers to build a future in PEI.

We help all newly landed immigrants and newcomers to Canada by providing vital support in the areas of short-term settlement services, long-term inclusion and community integration programs in the province of Prince Edward Island.

How You'll Spend Your Time

Playing a key role within our administration team, the Accounting Clerk will be responsible for calculating, preparing and processing Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll transactions, as well as assisting in monitoring budgets, report preparation and other financial records according to established procedures under the supervision of the Director of Finance and Administration. You will be:

  • Performing daily accounting functions such as posting accounts payable purchase and payment transactions, posting accounts receivable sale and receipt transactions, as well as posting and recording general journal entries
  • Processing of bi-weekly payroll, RRSP and Benefits related transactions, remittances and filings
  • Preparing bank deposits and petty cash replenishments
  • Performing monthly account reconciliations for sub-ledger accounts including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Clearing Accounts, Bank, Credit Card, Petty Cash and all Payroll-related accounts
  • Maintaining employee records, including creating, updating and modifying personal and payroll related information
  • Maintaining financial database records, including creating, updating and modifying customers, vendors, departments and funders
  • Ensuring all financial paperwork is filed on a timely basis
  • Assisting in the preparation of monthly internal/external financial reports and proposals
  • Responding to internal and external inquiries relating to payroll and/or accounting-related matters in a professional and timely manner
  • Performing other accounting-related duties as required

The typical work schedule is Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

What You'll Bring

  • You have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Commerce or Business Management/Administration or related disciplines, coupled with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • You are knowledgeable in Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), with a strong understanding of accounting and reporting in the not-for-profit sector being an asset.
  • Previous experience working with the immigrant or refugee populations would be beneficial.
  • You are computer-proficient, having experience working with MS Office and spreadsheet applications, as well as working knowledge of accounting-related software; previous experience using Sage 50 would be considered an asset.
  • A high degree of organization and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • You have a keen eye for detail, double and triple-checking to ensure accuracy.
