Position: Full-time term position
Term: Through 31 March 2023 (renewable April 1st each year, subject to program funding)
Salary: $23.14 per hour, 37.5 hours per week
Location: Charlottetown

IRSA is seeking a Canadian Life Skills (CLS) Worker to help us on our mission of building a welcoming and inclusive environment through bringing diverse communities together and empowering newcomers to build a future in PEI.

We help all newly landed immigrants and newcomers to Canada by providing vital support in the areas of short-term settlement services, long-term inclusion and community integration programs in the province of Prince Edward Island.

How You'll Spend Your Time

As a key member of the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) team, as a CLS Worker you will be primarily focused on providing settlement and integration supports to newly arrived Government Assisted Refugees in Canada to help them gradually build their confidence and independence, while lessening the stress by providing orientation, instruction and support on basic life skills of living in Canada. You will:

  • Collaborate with RAP and Settlement team members to conduct holistic assessments of client strengths and needs, developing and implementing appropriate case plans and strategies to address gaps for Government-assisted Refugees
  • Build trust with program clients through regular home visits, setting goals, further assessments and identifying areas of need
  • Provide orientation and practical support in areas of daily life, including personal and child health and safety, safe use of home amenities, hygiene and housekeeping, financial literacy and banking, shopping, use of public transit system, parenting, cultural norms and other topics as identified through needs assessment process
  • Provide training to families on proper cleaning, use of cleaning supplies, storage of groceries, cleaning of appliances, use of communal laundry facilities, disposal of garbage and recycling and other general life skills
  • Observe and supervise families to demonstrate they can adequately take care of their settlement needs, ensuring they are able to function independently, safely and confidently with general life skills and cultural norms they were provided training on
  • Provide accompaniment to services such as bank, school, shopping for groceries, visits to community centres, post office and other essential businesses to familiarize clients with necessary services, observing their progress and providing on-the-spot coaching and support
  • Refer and make connections for clients to appropriate internal and external programs and services as determined through needs assessments performed
  • Collaborate with RAP and Settlement teams to ensure adequate, timely and quality responses to client's questions and needs on an ongoing basis/external financial reports and proposals
  • Ensure up-to-date case notes are completed on client files in a fulsome manner within IRSA's client management system/or accounting-related matters in a professional and timely manner
  • Evaluate service program delivery and provide regular reporting for funding partners
  • Participate in regularly scheduled internal meetings and professional development opportunities to understand individual, team and organizations role in providing programming, supports and services for newcomers

This position entails a mixture of in and out-of-office work, with frequent travel locally and infrequent travel regionally. The typical work schedule is Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with availability required after hours and on weekends.

What You'll Bring

  • You have a post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology or related disciplines, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • You have the ability to clearly explain and model instructions to others.
  • You are an effective communicator in the English language, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and confidence in public speaking and presentation settings – the ability to communicate in languages other than English would be considered a strong asset.
  • You have demonstrated a high level of empathy coupled with a strong working knowledge of challenges and issues facing the newcomer population, networks and support organizations with demonstrated cultural competence and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Previous experience working with immigrant or refugee populations would be beneficial.
  • Previous experience working in a non-profit and/or non-government organization would be an asset.
  • You are computer-proficient, and have experience working with MS Office applications, social media and Google applications; experience working with a Client Management System (CMS) would be considered an asset.
  • You have a valid PEI driver's license with access to reliable transportation and a willingness to travel and visit clients' homes.
  • Current First Aid, and/or Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification would be considered an asset.
