Guide pour les nouveaux arrivants de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, Canada

Literacy and Educational Upgrading

In PEI there are learning opportunities available for adult residents who, for one reason or another, did not complete high school, or have difficulty reading and writing.

There are also opportunities for adults who have completed high school and wish to pursue higher education, but need upgrading in certain subjects before they enroll in regular post-secondary programs. For example, a person may need upgrading in subjects like academic English, academic math, biology or chemistry.

Obtaining or Upgrading High School Diploma as an Adult

Adults who are 18 years of age and out of school for at least a year may attend the Adult Education Program. Learners in this program can acquire high school credits or upgrade existing marks to meet the admission requirements of post-secondary institutions or to complete requirements for the PEI High School Diploma for Mature Students. They can also enroll in General Educational Development (GED) diploma preparation programs. GED is an equivalent to a high school diploma.

The Adult Education Program is available Island wide and is delivered by Holland College. Institute of Advanced Learning also offers this program in Charlottetown and Summerside.

Computer skills have become essential in virtually every job. Everybody should have basic computer skills.

Literacy Programs

There are also a number of volunteer programs that will help people who have greater difficulty reading and writing. You can contact any of those organizations to get more information on literacy classes in your area. [See Related Resources]

Upgrading Essential Skills in the Workplace
