Canada Connects— An inclusion program for newcomers

What is the Canada Connects program?

The Canada Connects program is designed to help newcomers to Canada by pairing them with volunteers who are well-established in the Prince Edward Island community. The program aims to facilitate the broader integration of new immigrants, particularly those arriving as refugees, into life in PEI. It provides newcomers with opportunities to learn about local cultural norms and expectations, develop their language skills in an informal setting, and explore various opportunities with the support of a volunteer—an individual, couple, or family.

What do Canada Connects volunteers do?

We ask the volunteers to commit to spending two hours per week with their matched partner for a period of six months, offering:

  • Information on Canadian customs, culture and society
  • Insights into life on PEI
  • Leisure time together
  • Moral support
  • An opportunity to practice English or French in an informal setting
  • A chance to attend fun free events organized by IRSA

Canada Connects volunteers are not expected to provide:

  • Housing
  • Food
  • Financial support
  • Transportation

What's in it for you?

Becoming a Canada Connects volunteer offers the opportunity to:

  • Gain new insights into different cultures and nations
  • Appreciate human resourcefulness and perseverance
  • View your own community through a fresh perspective
